Spring into life
Spring is one of my favourite seasons. It’s a sign that summer is just around the comer and it’s a time when everything is bursting with life and energy.
Australian author Amanda Davey (A Pocketful of Change, $12.95 including postage and handling-call (03) 9531 2533) is a great believer in using the change of seasons to balance your body and your life. She offers the following tips for making the most of spring….
The motto for spring is to tolerate all people, things and situations. You don’t have to like a situation, person or event to be tolerant, but your responses are the key to your future.
The juices to drink for spring are lemon and lime. They contain the type of vitamin C that assists your thyroid function. If your thyroid is not functioning properly, you can feel frustrated and lethargic. And these emotions do not fit in with spring. Squeeze your own juices and include some of the pith which is high in B vitamins, Throw in some zest to give extra punch to your thyroid.
Minimise foods from the lily family such as onions, garlic and leeks. Eat these on one day in five to ensure you digest and assimilate them properly and don’t compromise the functions of your thyroid gland.
Eat vegetables, such as zucchini, beans, spinach and celery, which are high in sodium, the main mineral the body needs at this time of year.
Avoid simple sugars as sweet cravings may be a sign of depleted thyroid function.
There’s no single important meal in spring but eat light meals several times a day.
When it comes to exercise, swimming is ideal. It’s also the season for exercises that promote fluid motion such as Tai Chi. For best results, do your exercise outdoors.
The muscles to tone during spring are your abdominals (stomach) and your quadriceps (front of thighs).
Develop a daily skin-and body-care routine in spring your body detoxifies, especially your face. It’s also a time when your skin is more sensitive to blemishes.
Enjoy spring’s many blooms either through your garden, colourful houseplants or by buying out flowers.
To maintain your energy in spring, the golden rule is, “Water, water everywhere and lots of drops to drink.”
