Soundtrack To Be Treasured
HOLLYWOOD -A superstar and a super-group on the same album?
That’s the lineup on the “Xanadu” movie soundtrack LP just released by MCA which features Olivia Newton-John and Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra.
“Xanadu” is one of the grand musicals of the years. Newton-John, at the crest of her career, dances with Gene Kelly in a 1940s-meets-the-1980s concept. Kelly, not as agile as he once was, nevertheless has lost none of the charm that made him a star back in the ’40s.
Lynne created the movie’s musical score, writing (and performing) five original songs.
The lovely Newton-John portrays a muse, one of Zeus’ nine daughters, in the movie. Actually, her own background is about as impressive. She is the granddaughter of German physicist Max Born, a Nobel Prize winner, and her father was headmaster of Ormond College in Melbourne where she grew up.
The LP music is superb. This is a soundtrack to be treasured.
