Translation:
Olivia Newton-John became a global star overnight. Now she's almost constantly on the road, traveling from pillar to post. Because of this, she often feels like she's being passed from pillar to post. She now yearns for a quiet life on her Malibu ranch.
I'm doing really well. But I don't know if I should be happy about that. It's all going a bit too fast. I can barely keep up. The weeks are flying by and I don't even realize it.
There's not a trace of fatigue on the face of thirty-year-old Olivia Newton-John. She jumps and runs through her beautiful home, a converted farmhouse in Malibu, USA (just outside Los Angeles), as if she's been on vacation for weeks.
Olivia Newton-John, the world's most sought-after singer at the moment, laughs and talks enthusiastically. But as soon as she sits down in one of the comfortable armchairs, she has great difficulty keeping her eyes open. Olivia admits: I'm tired, dead tired. This job scares me. I doubt I'll be able to keep it up much longer.
Since the premiere of the film of Grease,
Olivia Newton John hardly has a life of her own any more. The cinemas and the charts seem to have the fragile girl in their clutches. She travels the world giving concerts and doing television recordings.
Olivia eagerly jumped at the chance to star opposite John Travolta in a major film. But she didn't realize at the time what the film would mean. She became world famous overnight.
But it was also over in one go for her private life. Together with her boyfriend Lee Kramer for a few years now, she's been living quietly on that small farm. Olivia has always been quite happy. Far from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, she could be herself. Together with Lee, she cared for her eight horses, her dogs and cats, the chickens, and the sheep. Olivia pampered her pets as if they were her children.
Everything has changed
She never begins without first saying good morning to her animals. Maybe it's childish,
Olivia says a little apologetically. But yes, I'm truly obsessed with all those animals. So is Lee, by the way. We moved here to enjoy nature.
Her smile quickly fades again. But everything has changed here in the house in the last four months. I'm hardly home any more. I feel the animals miss me. When I ride back through the gate after being away for two weeks, the horses run towards the fence, whinnying. That really affects me. Then I get the feeling of what I'm doing it all for.
This great success is, of course, wonderful. I think a lot of my colleagues are quite jealous. They forget that it's all hard work. I fly from one side of the world to the other. All I see are hotel beds and lots of people standing around with drinks in their hands. I know this can't go on much longer. At night, I often wake up with a start. Then I dream of those parties again. All those people rushing towards me. And just when I want to run away, I wake up. The sweat of fear is on my forehead.
Too Heavy a Burden
Olivia Newton-John does not want to complain. And she says so clearly. I did it to myself. As a little girl I dreamed of a great career. Later that went away. I came to America to start my own life. I signed up with various companies to sing background vocals. I could easily earn a living with that. And really, without realizing it, I was world famous. The burden is really getting too heavy for me now.
She lets out a deep sigh. That little blonde singer, always so cheerful and friendly, is exhausted. It's not all just because of the traveling,
Olivia explains. My whole life has turned upside down. I can't just go shopping anywhere any more. Before, I could only do that in Hollywood and Los Angeles. But now all over the world.
When I arrive at an airport, there are often thousands of people waiting just to see or touch me. So even when I want to perform somewhere abroad, I hardly get time to go out alone. Bodyguards are always with me. I feel like I'm constantly being watched. We had to have a fence put up around the farm. Hardly anyone knows where Lee and I live, yet our house has already become a tourist attraction. A couple of guards always sleep here. I have to process all that. When we first moved here, Lee and I could do whatever we wanted. Now we have other people over all the time. I have to get used to that. But deep down, it's not easy. Sometimes I feel like putting them all on the other side of the gate.
Afraid of Success
Friendly Olivia momentarily turns furious. Don't blame me,
she says. Everyone's really trying their best to make me feel comfortable. The people who are here almost day and night now try to disturb us as little as possible. They know that Lee and I value our own lives so much. But when I come home tired, I sometimes lash out. Often without reason...
Olivia's eyes look sad. Sometimes I'm very scared,
she continues. Afraid of all that success. Before you know it, success goes to your head. And then you forget everything around you. That's what I'm fighting against. I just want to be myself. I don't want to lose my friends. And especially not Lee. I'm really afraid that's what will happen if I get caught up in that show business machine.
The blonde singer gets up and skips briskly to the kitchen to make coffee. The cheerful smile has returned to her face. The tired tone in her voice has disappeared.
Laughing, she says: I'm glad I can still handle myself. I know things can't go on like this. I have to make a choice. Either a lonely life at the top of show business. Or, less well known, being myself on this farm. I choose the latter. My animals are dear to me. And when all the hustle and bustle is behind us, I want a baby. I've talked about it with Lee often. He feels exactly the same way. When the baby is here, I don't want to work any more. Then it will all be over and I will truly be forgotten...
