For Australian Olivia, Grease
was quite a challenge. Over the past four years, she had earned a small fortune as a singer, with eight LPs, four of which went platinum (over $1 million each!).
By making the leap from singing idol to movie star, Olivia is taking a gamble. Only Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross, both also singing superstars, have managed to survive this metamorphosis unscathed over the past twenty years. Julie Andrews and Liza Minnelli also made it, but they were actresses rather than pop singers. Others, like Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, and Petula Clark, all failed in this regard. But Olivia is talented, intelligent, ambitious, and has a pretty good figure.
Becoming an actress was a big step for me, although Grease is initially a musical and essentially a continuation of my singing career. It's not my first film project. But for some reason, the roles or the films didn't suit me. Musicals did it more, except for this one with Streisand or Minnelli. I saw Grease on the London stage and had a blast. When I was offered the female lead role, I didn't hesitate for a moment...
Olivia is a wonderful girl who always looks you straight in the eye. She answers your questions straight to the point. In a clear, simple, and clear English. That language, however, is her biggest problem. After all, she can only manage her accent with difficulty. Australian: Originally, I was supposed to play an American teenager in 'Grease,' but they changed my accent to an Aussie. Yet I still claim I can act as well as anyone with an American accent. I also sing with an American accent. But who doesn't? My focus now is mainly on making films. Not that I don't want to sing any more, but I also want to break through as an actress. I'm 29 now and in 'Grease,' I play the role of an 18-year-old girl. So I can still go on for a while...
Innocent? Olivia plays the role of an innocent teenager in 'Grease,' but is she really that naive? For five years, she's been living with her manager-advisor Lee Kramer, an Englishman. She hates the stories about an affair with Travolta.
John is a sweet, platonic, fun friend. He helped me tremendously during the filming of 'Grease,' especially when I was absolutely terrified. After a long day of hard work, I messed up a particular take, but Johnny jumped in my defence and said that he, and no one else, was responsible for my failure...
Ranch: Olivia has been living on a large ranch in the mountains above Malibu for three years, where the Hollywood elite congregate. She lives there with her nine horses, four dogs, and two cats. She rides almost every day.Although she lives almost constantly in America, she retains her British citizenship.
She now dreams of a new film, but this time it won't be a musical. We asked her if she enjoys being compared to Doris Day. She burst out laughing: I love it, mate! As a teenager, I never missed a single one of her films!
