From cute to sensual. That’s the route Olivia Newton-John seems to be heading. She may even be elbowing her way out of the pop bubble - although she still has the top tenner “A Little More Love” amid her latest bunch. Her material is singed around the edges, and delivered hot. The title cut and a remake of “Gimme Some Lovin” are prime examples.
In recent albums, Newton-John has been testing new vocal ground. Here, it’s on “Please Don’t Keep Me Waiting” where she pulls a surprise. At first, you think one effect is a synthesizer gimmick; but no, that’s her launching a high-pitched scream-yell.
