Come on Over album review

FACT OF THE PLATTER IS… There aren’t many female singers who successfully bridge the gap of country and pop, but Linda Ronstadt and Olivia Newton-John have done just that in the past two years. But while Linda’s “Heart Like A ‘Wheel” album is excellent, “Come On Over” - Olivia Newton-John is uneven, and probably too countrified for the average pop listener.

Standout on the LP is “It’ll Be Me” in which the petite songstress pumps life into what could be a listless song. In similar fashion, “Greensleeves” is reworked into a compatible pop-country tune, and “Pony Ride” and “Come On Over” are easy on the ears.

However, “Jolene” is a disaster when compared to the Dolly Parton original, “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain” misses entirely, and the Beatles “Long and Winding Road” is given fair treatment, but doesn’t fit in with the rest of the album.

True Olivia fans may enjoy this, but not many others will find anything here to shout about.
