Country and Western Music Goes Over Big in Hull

FEATURING a guest spot by Olivia Newton-John. Baileys’ own star of the week, the second Country and Western festival promoted by Cravens Music Centre at the Jameson-street nightspot this week, proved to be another success story, with every seat and standing space occupied before the opening act had finished their contribution.

Clubland was well represented, both on stage and in the audience, with many well-known artists and officials from Hull concert halls who enjoyed this country music spectacular.

It was more of a party than an organised entertainment, with the audience accepting every invitation from the zuest quest artists to join in and sing or clap their hands. And the capacity attendance of lovers of this kind of music certainly, proved that there is a great following for the offerings of Mr Cash and his friends.

The programme was opened by two well-known Humberside clubland artists. the Country Gents, who excelled on this very special night for C and W enthusiasts, and they, like the artists who followed, were wildly received by the audience, encores becoming essential before they left the spotlight

The sound Compere for the evening was Tex Milne, with Pete Watson providing accompaniment for all the acts, except Olivia Newton-John, at the drums. Amplification was in the capable hands of Bill Weston, a top exponent of country music himself, and there were many complimentary remarks about the high quality of the throughout the show.

Country Following the Gents were Little Ginny, Blue Ridge, Phil Sinner, Ian Attrill, Country Fever, the Roy Turner Trio and, of course, the guest star.

Presenting a show of this kind involves a tremendous amount of work by the back-room boys, and they are to be congratulated on the result. It was an evening that will long be remembered by those lucky enough to obtain a ticket for Hull’s very own festival of Country and Western music.
