The big show begins! Sydney’s largest stadium hosts the opening ceremony of the XXIV Olympic Games this morning. Last night, a million people accompanied the flame (here held by Olivia Newton-John) on the 99th and penultimate day of its journey from Greece. Spread over sixteen days, the competitions will pit 10,530 athletes against each other in twenty-eight disciplines. The French hope to win around forty medals.

Light the fire! This morning, in Sydney, Australia, the Games of the XXVII Olympiad open. France will be represented by a strong delegation of 343 athletes led by judoka David Douillet. After their impressive haul of 37 medals in Atlanta in 1996, the French team hopes to do even better in the Southern Hemisphere.
