Reconcilation

Ed- Olivia referred to this article in an interview for New Idea saying that it wasn’t completely true.

0livia Newton-John’s daughter Chloe got exactly what she asked Santa for this Christmas mummy and daddy back together again under the same roof! Chloe, 10, is being hailed by family friends as a little Christmas angel who officially reunited Olivia and her estranged husband Matt Lattanzi by writing a letter to Santa, which one friend says read: “Dear Santa, my only wish for Christmas is for mummy and daddy to be together so we can be a happy family again …” Olivia reportedly wept when she found her precious daughter’s letter and immediately called Matt in Australia and suggested he come home to Los Angeles for the holidays. Says a friend of Matt’s: “Matt was on the first plane back to LA after the call from Olivia. There has never been any animosity between Matt and Olivia. Chloe has always come first in their lives, but no-one expected a full-fledged reconciliation. But from what I hear from Matt, they are not play-acting just for Chloe’s sake. He says this is for real.”

In April last year, Olivia officially stated: “[We] regretfully announce an amicable separation.” Woman’s Day reported last January that Matt had walked out on Olivia during the Christmas holidays, as a tearful Olivia called her dearest friends and told them he was gone for good. Immediately upon learning of the Woman’s Day article, Olivia and Matt both denied publicly that their then 10-year union was over. But just months later they confirmed the original report as true with their separation announcement. The marriage had been plagued with problems for many years. Adding to the stress of the union between Olivia, now 46, and actor Matt, 36, was the collapse of Olivia’s Koala Blue clothing line, which drove her to bankruptcy. Then came her 1992 battle with breast cancer, which stressed Matt to the point of having a complete nervous breakdown. Friends of Matt have said the marriage had been in ruins for some time. They said it had been just a sham to protect Chloe from the emotional upheaval of a broken home, and to fulfill Olivia’s obsession with keeping a squeaky-clean image for her fans and friends.

A close friend of Olivia says: “You could have knocked me over with a feather when Olivia called me just before Christmas and said, Well, Matt and I are back together and we have never been happier! She was gushing like a schoolgirl as she confided to me that Matt had moved back into their beach house.” According to other friends, Olivia and Matt had planned to spend Christmas in Aspen at a private bungalow owned by their good friend Jon Peters, producer and former husband of Barbra Streisand. But at the last minute, Olivia called one of her friends who was also going to Aspen and said: “Matt and I hope you don’t mind, but we’ve decided to stay home and celebrate Christmas privately as a family once again.”

So, Olivia and Matt decked the halls of their ecologically correct Malibu house with boughs of holly and other brilliant decorations to make this Christmas the most wonderful the family has ever enjoyed. “Olivia doesn’t believe in cutting down trees, so she bought a living tree which can be re-planted,” says a friend. “She and Chloe decorated the tree with popcorn strings and the girls sprinkled red and green coloured sugar on cookies they baked in Livvie’s kitchen. “Outside, Matt joined Olivia and Chloe and the three of them made snow angels in the sand as they watched the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.” However, a For Sale sign is still posted outside the happy second-honeymoon haven, which Matt designed with the help of an architect friend. About a month ago an anonymous buyer put a bid on the multi-million dollar house. The original asking price had been slashed in an effort to sell the property since the separation. But such details were a million miles from Olivia and Matt’s minds as they watched Chloe open her gifts.

Says a friend: “Chloe got a Baywatch Barbie with a dolphin that chirps, farmer’s pants and boots, and this year’s hottest kids’ video cassette, Land Before Time III.” Olivia and Matt hadn’t planned on exchanging presents as they felt that no material gift could equal their reconciliation, but Matt surprised Olivia. He gave her a white coat with imitation fur. He told a friend: “When Livvie put on that coat, I felt like we had gone back in time to Xanadu 1979, when we first met and fell in love. She looked so young and beautiful I do love her!” So it was a very Merry Christmas for Chloe but Olivia has yet to publicly announce whether she and Matt have truly reconciled and are planning to live happily ever after.
